FCTC Test Preparation & Written Test

H2 Firefighter Application
New Applicants
The H2 Firefighter application period for the upcoming Recruit Academy closes on June 26, 2026 end of day.
To be considered for the upcoming academy, candidates must:
1. Submit an application for the H2 Firefighter opening on the DHR website.
2. Must be current on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List (SEL)
- Pass the FCTC Written Test with a score of 70% or greater within one year of deadline
- Cal-JAC CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) Card within one year of deadline
- NREMT, CA EMT-1, or CA EMT-P (Upload to your FCTC profile - SFFD Requirement)
If you are already on the FCTC SEL, you will still need to apply for the H2 Firefighter position.
Returning Applicants
Eligible List Status
- Once placed on an H2 Firefighter Eligible list, you remain eligible for two years from the list's publication date.

Candidates who are only on the June 2024 list will need to submit a new application and meet all basic minimum qualifications to be placed on the FCTC SEL on the June 26, 2026 deadline, to remain active in the H2 Firefighter recruitment process.
Maintenance Requirements
- A current FCTC score or CPAT is not required to remain on the H2 eligible list.
- If selected for a Chief's Command Staff interview, you must present a valid CPAT that will remain current until 3 months prior to the academy start date.
- You must maintain both a valid EMT certification and driver's license with FCTC throughout the entire process.

- The Chief of the Department may select you for:
- An upcoming boot camp
- A Chief's Command Staff interview
- You will be notified if additional application steps are required.
