5.04 Glazing in Stairway Exit Enclosure Construction

Reference: 2007 California Building Code, Section 1020.1.1

The CBC does not allow openings into exit enclosures, such as a stairway, other than those required to exit from normally occupied areas and those necessary for egress from the enclosure. Certain  window sprinklers are listed to protect glazing in rated walls where allowed by the authority having jurisdiction. It is the policy of the San Francisco Fire Department to disallow this use in stair enclosures.
