4.15 Use of Powder Driven Studs for Hanging Sprinkler PipeReference: 2007 CBC Chapter 16, 2005 ASCE 7 Chapter 13
Powder driven studs are not permitted to be used for hanging sprinkler pipe in buildings where the seismic design category, as defined in the 2005 ASCE 7 Chapter 13, are listed as D, E, or F. Most buildings in San Francisco are listed in these categories.
The horizontal force factor must be determined using the method outlined in 2005 ASCE 7.
Existing powder driven studs will be allowed to remain unless the pipe is being moved or altered, or the hanger is not holding properly.
Powder driven studs are not permitted to be used for sway bracing.
